Gulaal

Even more random than DevD, this Anurag Kashyap film impresses nevertheless. The rawness is in your face - a completely unapologetic film. We watched it and were zonked by it. Rajasthan being the landscape - members of this blog should be especially interested.
The performances are great. KK as usual is superb.

But I am saving the best for the last - the soundtrack! You should see the movie for this one reason. I am currently high on the songs - "Ranaji", "Beedo" are superb numbers - naughty and earthy. "Arambh" and "Duniya" make you feel like you have been missing these songs all the time.

All in all - the film is well worth the time (and money spent) on it. Rent the DVD. Don't watch it with parents or kids.

  1. I feel that Anurag Kashyap's movie grows on you. For both DevD and Gulaal, I did not like them that much on first viewing. Probaly, shocked by the "randomness", But, I kept coming back to the scenes in my mind. And, DevD felt absolutely brilliant on second time. Haven't had a second take on Gulaal yet :)
And, music, I don't know Anurag kashyap manages to do this every time! If you haven't yet heard Gulaal's music, please do this the first thing.

  2. The songs of Gulaal are on the top of our car music charts since they were released, they are truly amazing. The movie really hits you hard, it is so raw, and I find myself repeating its scene in mind now and then. Piyush had seen it long back, but wasn;t showing me, I saw it around two months back.
    I shuddered and kept watching.

  3. agree with the review,... except that I thought 'sheher' and 'yaara maula' are 2 tracks which really stand out for me. like the movie, they grow by the time.
