Gulaal

Even more random than DevD, this Anurag Kashyap film impresses nevertheless. The rawness is in your face - a completely unapologetic film. We watched it and were zonked by it. Rajasthan being the landscape - members of this blog should be especially interested.
The performances are great. KK as usual is superb.

But I am saving the best for the last - the soundtrack! You should see the movie for this one reason. I am currently high on the songs - "Ranaji", "Beedo" are superb numbers - naughty and earthy. "Arambh" and "Duniya" make you feel like you have been missing these songs all the time.

All in all - the film is well worth the time (and money spent) on it. Rent the DVD. Don't watch it with parents or kids.

Hangover and Star Trek

This blog seems to be slow these days, an obvious reflection of the movie makers strike in Bollywood. Meanwhile, we tried our hands on some Hollywood stuff.

Firstly, Star Trek: 3/5 from me.
I am not a fan or follower of Star Trek series, so for me it was just another sci fi futuristic space movie. If we have any Star Trek fans in the members (which I don't think we do), this review is not for them. As typical of Star Trek, the movie had some logically ridiculous stuff, and was cheesy at many places. Having said that, I have to admit it was still quite entertaining and stylish. Overall I had fun. So, my recommendation - if you want to spend an evening with a minimum level of fun guaranteed, go for it.

Or better yet, go and watch "Hangover". Very witty, funny, entertaining, well acted. You won't regret it. caution: the humor of this movie has some arbitrariness to it; should not be watched with kids or parents :)
4/5

Dev D

OK. This is the kind of movie which will generate extreme reviews depending on the person you ask. So, when I say I loved it - you should be wary.

Stuff I liked:
* Superb visuals - especially when the protagonist is drunk
* The music - absolutely fantastic! In fact, you should watch the movie just so that you can enjoy the soundtrack later.

It reminded me of Pink Floyd's The Wall movie - an assault on the senses.

Arranged

We watched this movie on Sunday night, recommended by Netflix to be of our taste. And indeed, we loved it (btw Netflix has amazing movie recommendation system, it actually works!).
Its a short movie about two young lady teachers: a muslim and an orthodox jew. How they face similar cultural difficulties related to arranged marriages, how they handle them etc. The movie has a very positive tone, not very intense, and will keep you smiling quietly. See if you can find it at some english movie rentals.

Book reviews??

I was wondering if we could add book reviews to this blog. It fits the blog since its named `Lets' have sane "reviews"' not "movie reviews". The reason being that I recently picked a book (No. I Ladies Detective Agency) after reading Shweta's review on her blog. And it went very well for me. I picked the book because after reading the review I felt that's exactly the kind of book I am feeling like reading right now. And it turned out to be what I wished for - a book with an idyllic setting, simple people, simple plots.

Juno

A 2007 movie of a 16 year old girl who gets pregnant. I loved the movie. Definitely worth a watch. An interesting and amusing soundtrack too.

Sorry Bhai : A refreshing movie

Sorry Bhai is one of those movies jo kab aayi aur chali gayi pata hi nahi chala. I did not watch it earlier because 'Bhai' reminded me of Salman Khan (no seriously, I thought it was some 'chal mere bhai' league)

But it is not definitely of that kind with its wonderful cast - Bomen Irani, Shabhana Azmi, Sanjay Suri, Shraman Joshi and lesser known Chitragandha. The movie has a simple story with a befitted humor.

Recommendation: I am not writing more about the the movie. Get hold of a DVD and WATCH it.
